How was the article recorded?
• The article would be recorded using a betacam camcorder, with Ampex 1 inch reel tape.
• A dopesheet would be used for recordings, this was a small spreadsheet which contained tows and columns. Its purpose was to provide instructions on the article; the allocated time, the scenes, the camera movements etc.
How was the footage taken back to the studio?
• The footage was sent back to the news studio by the news reporter themselves. They would have to get to the studio as soon as they could manually, in most cases by getting a taxi or car to the location.
How was the footage edited?
• The footage would be edited on 1 inch reel to reel machines.
• The film would be edited manually by physical splicing
• Sound was usually from a separate magnetic film, which would be edited in sync.
• After editing on the 1 inch reel to reel machine, the edited footage might be put on Beta SP. Beta SP used metal particle tape to enable the shorter wavelengths to be recorded and replaced.
• To add the names (graphic equivalents) on top of the video, the Ashton Character Generator was used.
How was the footage played?
• The transmission playout used for the news was Sony Betacart, which was a robot which controlled 5 Beta SP machines, (the robot loads the tapes).
Other technology used in news...
• Video graphics in video were supplied by the ‘revolutionary’ Quantel Paintbox. This was the world’s first successful full colour paint system.
• Still photographs were televised by pointing a camera at the item.
