Proposal For Advert

Idea:

  • · Voiceover says: “Do you enjoy the perfect holiday?”
  • · Non vocal Hawaiian music plays in the background at a slow tempo starting prominently, giving the audience the feel / sense of a relaxing holiday
  • · Through some distortion, footage from a holiday location (matching the music) can be seen. Light background sound effects of the seas moving can be heard very faintly.
  • · Suddenly a very loud ‘tyre screech’ sound effect is heard, (this stops the Hawaiian music)
  • · During which time the video transitions to a very clear shot of a man sat outside at home, in the cold and poor weather conditions dressed in holiday clothing and sporting sun lotion.
  • · Voiceover says: “For an insect free holiday, new ‘bugerd’”
  • · The bemused looking man looks to his left at the insect repellent on the table.
  • · A stern, becoming sarcastic voice over says: “Gets rid of insects, just don’t forget...do the disappearing act yourself!”
  • · Cuts to a pack shot of the insect repellent, next to the cocktail with a fly in the drink.
  • · A ‘spray’ sound effect is heard, as the shot cuts to an identical shot but without the fly.
  • · A graphic appeals beneath the table: ‘Bugerd’
  • · Fade to black.

Location:

  • Up to two locations are going to be used for the advert:
    • · Location one will resemble the ‘ideal holiday’ location of ‘sun sea and sand’, i.e. a beach. Realistically time restrictions may mean that I cannot record in this desired location, in which case leaving two options:

o To film footage of a location, that once noise / dissolve is added, will look like the location

o Use some old footage which I have captured from a similar location.

Either way, even through the distortion used, it is very clear of that shot that is needed and desired effect it will give the audience. The background sound effects used will bring the picture to life.

  • · Location two is attempting to be the exact opposite from location one. This outdoor location has to appear a very unappealing location, and make the actor look very secluded and lonely.
    • This location has been chosen and confirmed. The location is in the back courtyard of a house 5-10 minutes’ walk away from university in Nottingham’s city centre.

Audio:

The audio in this advert is intending to make the impact, along with the video.

Both spoken word (in the way of voice over), sound effects and music are to be included.

  • · The music, which is used for the first shot is of Hawaiian origin and feel, using light strings. The music begins as the first voiceover ends. It is used to give a feeling of an exotic, relaxing holiday.

· Sound effects:

o ‘Tyre screech’, this effect stops the music and changes the direction and feel of the advert. The effect brings the illusion of the ‘perfect holiday’ to an end, it’s a reality check.

o A ‘beach’ sound effect is to be used during the first scene. Used alongside the distorted image, this effect will make viewers sure of the location. This is a background recording from the beach.

o A general ‘outside background’ sound effect will be used to add a quiet and lonely effect in the reality shot of the actor in his ‘garden’.

o A ‘spray’ sound effect will be used in the pack shot to signify the use of repellent, after the effect finishes, the ‘fly’ disappears.

· There are three separate uses of voiceover in the advert. On the whole voice over was preferred to on screen graphics, because the impact and effect of the words can have more impact in the way they are said, than being displayed digitally.

Props:

  • Insect repellent, the product itself, used in the background through the advert, but mainly used for a close-up in the pack shot.
  • A deck chair / garden chair, used for the second scene
  • A book, used for the second scene. The book is on the table, and is used as another sign of being on a holiday.
  • A cocktail, similarly used for the same reason as the book, the cocktail is another sign to make the audience relate it to a holiday.
  • Holiday attire, worn by the actor will indicate that the actor was all ready to be on a hot holiday location. Attire includes; flip flops, bright shorts and a holiday Hawaiian shirt.
  • Fly ice cube, this will be placed in the cocktail.
  • Plastic fly, similarly to the cocktail this will be placed on the table, and during the pack shot will disappear.

Talent:

The advert only requires one actor. The actor is required for the second scene only, and will be required to be wearing flip-flops, shorts and a Hawaiian shirt (holiday clothes). The actor will have to appear relaxed yet bemused sitting in the chair outside in poor weather and surroundings.

The actor does not have any spoken words, and only movement will be looking towards the insect repellent.

There is a verbal agreement with the actor at present that he will be able available to perform for the recording of the advert.

Length:

The work specification states that the advert is to be 30 seconds long. Therefore the advert will be exactly 30 seconds long. The timing of the recordings equate to that of the allotted time.

Time of segments:

Scene 1. Ext. Distorted Beach. Day.

(8 seconds)

Scene 2. Ext. Courtyard. Day.

(12 seconds)

Scene 2. Ext. Courtyard. Day.

(5 seconds)

Shots to be used:

In the first scene, the shot used is not vitally important. The shot type that has been decided to be used is a mid / long range still shot of the location.

Within the second scene the shot that is going to be used is a steady mid-range shot with both the actor and the table being in the shot.

For the pack shot, an extreme close-up shot will be used to show the insect repellent and the cocktail.

The Final Year

The final year is well and truly under way.

My option for this year are Audio and Visual, and at present I am in the early stages of planning to make a 30 second advert for an insect repellent.

At the same time, I am also trying to finalise my subject area and question for my research project. I am in and out of the library and researching on the internet for material that I think will help the question I have proposed to my tutor a few days ago which is 'As technology evolves, is there a need for professional multimedia practitioners?' I am in the thought process of considering changing that to a question along the general lines of 'With the constant evolving on modern technology, are professional multimedia companies in trouble?'.
